Choice or Obligation?

Your alarm goes off, you get out of bed and your mind says… what? Ugh, I have to deal with work… I have to exercise… I have to make the kids breakfast… I have to take the dog out… I have to… fill in the blank.

My question for you is: Are you operating out of choice or obligation?

This question brings you face-to-face with the power of your subconscious mind. Your subconscious works to avoid conflict. When you are being stretched into something uncomfortable, it convinces you to walk away, ignore or somehow avoid the discomfort. When you’re not aware of why you’re doing what you’re doing, you operate from a psychological prison, trapped in stories you’ve been telling yourself–which become your beliefs.

Your subconscious mind is fueled by your habits of thought. Your habits are fueled by your beliefs. Right and wrong thinking is the basis for controlling your words and actions.

“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7)

There is the spiritual law of what we sow, we reap. When we apply this to the thoughts we’re thinking, it reminds us that whatever we dish out is returned to us. This includes “stinking thinking.”

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.” (Luke 6:37-38)

My point in sharing this is to help you understand everything starts with your mindset. If your subconscious mind is running the show, you’re operating out of obligation, not choice. Wouldn’t you rather choose the thoughts you’re thinking?

What if you replace, “I have to…” with “I get to…”? What would this look like for you? You get to wake up and greet another day. You get to move your body. You get to make your children breakfast. You get to take your dog for a walk. You get to go to work.

Would you feel your operating out of choice or obligation?

How does this shift in mindset feel to you? I would love to hear your thoughts. What has opened up for you?
